Vol. 408 No. 2

Written Answers - Tralee Post-Primary Places.

Dick Spring

Ceist:

34 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the acute lack of places for boys in post-primary schools in Tralee, County Kerry; if she will outline the proposals she intends to implement in order to remedy this situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There is no shortage of pupil places for boys at post-primary level in Tralee.

There are four post-primary schools in Tralee which cater for boys: the Christian Brothers School; the Vocational School; St. Mary's Secondary School; and Gaelcholáiste Trá Lí.

The intake policy of each school is a matter for school management. My Department are aware that some boys may not receive a place in the first school of their choice. This is not unusual, however, in a centre such as Tralee where there are a number of schools. My Department's main responsibility is to ensure that in Tralee as a whole adequate provision of post-primary places exists and my Department are satisfied that such is the case, both for boys and girls. In fact there are 250 surplus student places in Tralee.
