Vol. 408 No. 6

Written Answers. - Roads Expenditure.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

73 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline (a) the amount of rate support provided in 1978 for regional and county roads in each county, (b) the amount spent from own resources for each county in 1990 and (c) the amount of own resources per kilometer applied to regional and county roads for each county for each year since 1978.

Amounts of rate support grant are not allocated in respect of particular local services.

Road expenditure returns from local authorities show a single figure under the heading "Local Funds" for expenditure financed from Local authorities' own resources, including rate support grants. Details of local authority expenditure on county and regional roads from "Local Funds" in the years 1978 to 1987 are published in the Statistical Abstracts for the year 1978 to 1990. The reply to Question No. 175 of 23 April 1991 gives equivalent data for the years 1988 and 1989. Data for 1990 is not yet available.

Information in relation to number of kilometres of regional and county roads in each county can be obtained from the Inventory of Public Roads in Ireland as at 31 December 1977 which is available in the Oireachtas Library. Only minor additions have been made to the overall road network since then. It is planned to carry out a new inventory once the new road classification system provided for in section 10 of the Roads Bill, 1991 has come into force.
