Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Art Gallery Refurbishment.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

23 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Finance if he will outline the progress made to date on the restoration and refurbishment of the National Art Gallery; if any timetable has been set for the completion of the work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The National Gallery consists of three wings which were built in 1864, 1903 and 1968. The up-to-date position for each of these wings is as follows.

A major overhaul of the roof of the 1864 wing was completed in 1989. Following the roof work, most of the galleries were redecorated. An upgraded lighting system was also provided on the ground floor.

A major refurbishment scheme for the 1903 wing was completed in early 1990. This work comprised mainly the provision of a new entrance hall and reception facility; the fireproofing and redecoration of the galleries; and the provision of lighting and security systems in line with modern standards.

It is hoped to commence work later this year on a major refurbishment of the 1968 wing.

The work will take of the order of two years to carry out and should be completed by the end of 1993.
