Vol. 408 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cork Nature Reserve.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

33 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance his views on whether Lough Hyne in west Cork is unique in national and international terms; and if he will support the case for the establishment of an interpretative centre there.

Lough Hyne is internationally important because of its wide range of important habitats and abundance of animal and plant species.

The establishment of an interpretative centre at Lough Hyne Nature Reserve was investigated in 1989 but rejected as it was felt that the habitat would be altered by the proposed structure and the unique features we are trying to protect would be damaged.

There are no funds available this year for the project. If funds become available in the future the question of siting an interpretative centre at another site close to Lough Hyne will be given further consideration.
