Vol. 408 No. 8

Written Answers. - EC Structural Funds.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

48 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself with the present administration and operations of the seven sub-regions of the country established for the purpose of ensuring Ireland's maximum participation in the EC Structural Funds; the plans, if any, he has to publish reports on the activities and achievements of the sub-regional bodies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the Deputy is referring to the sub-regional review committees which were established as part of the monitoring provisions of the Community Support Framework — the agreement between Ireland and the EC Commission which governs the provision of Structural Fund aid to Ireland up to the end of 1993.

The role of the sub-regional review committees is to assist in monitoring implementation of the Community Support Framework in their respective sub-regions. To this end, the committees have been provided with detailed information on the measures being implemented under the various sectoral operational programmes drawn up under the CSF. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that the committees are carrying out their monitoring role in a diligent and satisfactory manner.
As the committees have been established in a consultative capacity, the publication of a report detailing their operations, as suggested by the Deputy, is not appropriate.
