Annual returns of expenditure by local authorities indicate that, in 1989, their expenditure, from own resources (including rate support grant), totalled £6.9 million on road improvements and £70.2 million on road maintenance. These amounts exclude expenditure on overheads. Comparable statistics for 1990 are not yet available.
