Vol. 408 No. 9

Written Answers. - New Teaching Posts.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

80 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education if she will list the primary schools to which the 250 additional teachers have been allocated in accordance with the commitment given in the Programme fo Economic and Social Progress.

In the school year 1991-92 the total number of additional and new teaching posts will be approximately 500. This will reduce the overall pupil/teacher ratio to 25.8/1.

Schools have been notified of an improved staffing schedule, implementation of which will absorb approximately 250 of these posts. These remaining posts will be targeted to help disadvantaged and handicapped groups.

The allocation of these specialist posts is in course of determination and it is not possible at present to list the schools in question. However the specialist posts will be allocated as follows: (1) extension of the home school liaison school; (2) remedial posts; (3) concessionary posts in disadvantaged areas; (4) posts in special education (including generic visiting teacher service) and (5) visiting teacher service for children of travellers.

This information was contained in a circular issued to BOM of schools in March of this year.
