Vol. 409 No. 1

Written Answers. - Portumna (Galway) School.

Paul Connaughton

Ceist:

152 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to (a) the serious structural building defects at the girl's national school, Portumna, County Galway, (b) the fact that the two storey building is a fire hazard with the potential to cause loss of life or to inflict serious injury on children and teachers, (c) the dampness and the serious sewerage problems in the school and (d) that the people of Portumna are engaged in fund raising for a new national school since 1972; and if she will now announce the commencement date for the new school on a site long since approved by her Department.

Consideration is being given in my Department to the provision of a new central school in Portumna to replace the existing boys' and girls' schools.

In the meantime, a report has been sought on the condition of the current girls' school.
