Vol. 409 No. 1

Written Answers. - Drinking in Public Places.

Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

88 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Justice if he will take action to prohibit drinking on the streets in line with the existing law which prohibits people who are under age from drinking in public places; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ben Briscoe

Ceist:

89 Mr. Briscoe asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that there is a large increase in the amount of drinking which it taking place in our public parks including the Phoenix Park; if he will have this checked with the parks authorities for confirmation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 88 and 89 together.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that they are not aware of any increase of the kind suggested in the amount of drinking taking place in our public parks and that the incidence of drinking in public places, at present, is not such as to give rise to serious concern. I have no proposals to amend the law to prohibit drinking in public places as the existing laws on public order are considered adequate to deal effectively with any particular difficulties that may arise because of persons drinking to excess.
