Vol. 409 No. 1

Written Answers. - Vehicle Inspections.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

93 Mr. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice if he has satisfied himself that sufficient personnel and equipment are available in the Carriage Office to inspect for roadworthiness all buses, including imported second-hand touring coaches, for which PSV licences are required.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are seven public service vehicle inspectors in the Carriage Office in Dublin whose duties include the inspection of buses and coaches for roadworthiness. This is considered by the Garda authorities to be a sufficient staff provision to meet the demands on the service. To further increase the efficiency of this office two clerical assistants have recently been assigned there. Furthermore the public service vehicle inspectors involved have been put on a seven day duty roster with effect from 1 April 1991.

The Garda authorities advise that the equipment available to the Carriage Office to carry out its work is considered to be satisfactory and that a recently installed vehicle inspection facility at Santry Garda station which can facilitate the inspection of all large public service vehicles will be operational in the near future.
