The only information collected by my Department on the operation of the enforcement provisions of the 1986 Act relates to the total number of prosecutions under the Act and the total number of on the spot fine notices issued. In 1990, 510 such prosecutions were taken and 230 conviction were secured. In addition, a total of 6,766 fine on the spot notices were issued, of which 1,971 were paid. Figures for 1988 and 1989 were published in the Environment Bulletin for July/September 1989 and July/September 1990, respectively.
