Vol. 409 No. 2

Written Answers. - Youth and Community Organisation Funding.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

85 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education whether, in relation to youth and sport matters, a breakdown of the allocation of money to disadvantaged youth is available; the criteria employed for allocation of this money; if she will list the youth and community organisations in receipt of this money and list the youth and community organisations refused such funding; and the reasons for these decisions.

The funds at the disposal of my Department under the youth and sport programmes are allocated to various activities some of which are aimed at young people in general and some specifically at the disadvantaged. Even in the former case, however, the organisations concerned are advised that priority in the use of the funding must be accorded to disadvantaged youth.

It is not possible for that reason to quantify the total amount which goes to the benefit of the disadvantaged. In the case of projects specifically directed towards the disadvantaged £3.4 million was allocated from the youth budget and £.38 million from the sports budget in 1990.

For details of the recipients of these allocations and the criteria involved I would refer the Deputy to the beneficiary compendium compiled by the national lottery for the period 1 January 1987 to 31 December 1989. The corresponding compendium for 1990 is not yet available.

It is not the practice to give details of applicants who do not satisfy the criteria for grant assistance.
