Vol. 409 No. 3

Written Answers. - Litter Warden Services.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

60 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment if he has satisfied himself with the litter warden services; and the number of summons-prosecutions issued in 1990 for the simple disposal of litter such as cigarettes and light papers, onto the street.

Litter is the most obvious and persistent of our environmental problems, and a wide range of counter-measures is necessary to deal with it. I am at present considering a number of initiatives to improve the situation.

Litter warden services, where they operate, are contributing usefully to the overall clean-up of our cities and towns. There was an increase in 1990 in the number of full-time and part-time wardens employed by local authorities and the combined figure for prosecutions instituted and on-the-spot fines was approximately 600.
