Vol. 409 No. 4

Written Answers. - Production of Banknotes.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

73 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance if the Central Bank mint seeks business from other countries for the printing of their currencies; if he will outline the countries, if any, for which the Irish mint has printed money; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The issue of the currency is a matter for the Central Bank. The bank informs me that it does not print banknotes for other countries — nor has it sought business of this type. A situation of excess capacity for the printing of banknotes exists in many central banks, as well as in commercial security printing establishments. In developing countries the trend has been, and continues to be, for the establishment of their own printing works for reasons of security and prestige. Consequently, the market for the production of banknotes commercially is a reducing one.
