Vol. 409 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ground Rent.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

14 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice the estimated number of properties upon which ground rent is payable in Ireland; if he will outline the amounts involved; the number and extent of payments of such ground rents to landlords or estate trusts outside this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

No reliable estimate is possible of the number of outstanding ground rents but a very rough estimate of the number payable on domestic dwellings is about 200,000. Ground rents on domestic dwellings can range from nominal amounts to sums of £20 or more per annum. No information is available on the number of foreign landlords to whom ground rents are payable.

On the general issue of ground rents, I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 48 of 2 May 1991, columns 2007 and 2008.
