Vol. 409 No. 5

Written Answers. - Crime Statistics.

Michael Joe Cosgrave

Ceist:

106 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the incidences of crime reported at the following Garda stations (1) Howth, (2) Raheny and (3) Coolock for (a) 1990 and (b) up to March 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that provisional figures for a number of indictable crimes recorded in the sub-districts of Howth, Raheny and Coolock for the year 1990 are as set out in the following tabular statement. I expect that final figures for the year 1990 will be available soon.

1990

Howth

623

Raheny

688

Coolock

1,673

The tentative estimates which are available indicate that indictable crimes recorded in the period to the end of March in the areas referred to by the Deputy were Howth 178, Raheny 192 and Coolock 396.
It is important to make the point, of course, that estimated figures gathered over a relatively short period for particular areas cannot be regarded as being firmly indicative of a longer term trend. It is necessary to make it clear also that the Garda authorities keep the crime situation and policing needs in each area under constant review and make such adjustments to police response capacity in these areas as they deem necessary.
