Vol. 409 No. 5

Written Answers. - Crime Statistics.

Seán Barrett

Ceist:

109 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Justice the number of reported house break-ins in the Shankill area of County Dublin for each of the years between 1987 and 1990, and to date in 1991.

The number of burglaries at dwellings — including houses, flats, etc. — in the Shankill area of County Dublin which were recorded by the Garda Síochána for each of the years 1987 to 1990 is set out in the tabular statement below. I expect that final figures for the year 1990 will be available soon.

*1990 figures are provisional.
With regard to figures to date from 1991, the position is that these have not been finalised. The tentative estimates which are available indicate that the number of similar burglaries in the Shankill area in the first three months of this year were 135.
It is important to make the point, of course, that estimated figures gathered over a relatively short period for particular areas cannot be regarded as being firmly indicative of a longer term trend. It is necessary to make it clear also that the Garda authorities keep the crime situation and policing needs in each area under constant review and make such adjustments to police response capacity in these areas as they deem necessary.
