Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Heart By-Pass Surgery Application.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

140 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health the date by which it is anticipated that an applicant for a heart by-pass operation (details supplied) in County Mayo can be expected to be called for surgery; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The person concerned is on the waiting list for cardiac surgery at the Mater Hospital. The scheduling of surgery is a matter for the clinical judgment of the consultant concerned. However, if this person feels that he needs more immediate attention, he should contact his general practitioner who would be in the best position to highlight his case to his consultant.

The Deputy will be pleased to know that, in order to increase cardiac surgery activity from 500 to 750 by-pass operations per annum, I recently provided special funds for the provision of ten additional cardiac beds at the Mater Hospital.
