Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Bray (County Wicklow) School.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

142 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the shortage of space at St. Patrick's Loreto primary school, Bray, County Wicklow where the extra teacher to which they are entitled due to large numbers of pupils, cannot be used to take a class and thus reduce the numbers in the already overcrowded classrooms, but is being used instead as a resource teacher; and the steps she will take to remedy this situation to ensure that class sizes are reduced in this school as promised in the Programme for Economic and Social Progress.

The staffing of a national school is determined by the enrolment on the 30 September of the previous year.

In the case of St. Patrick's NS Loreto Convent, Bray, there were 934 pupils enrolled on 30 September 1990, which warrants a staff of principal plus 28 assistants for the 1991-92 school year. The school will also have the services of a full-time remedial teacher and a special class teacher.

An application has not been received from the school for the provision of additional accommodation.
