Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Additional Teaching Qualification.

William Cotter

Ceist:

150 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Education if she will outline the additional qualification which is required by a person wishing to teach in a national school in this country having obtained a degree in education which included Irish as one of the subjects, in Northern Ireland; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A person who had obtained a primary degree in education in Northern Ireland would be eligible for recognition as a national teacher provided he or she had acquired the necessary qualifications — oral and written — in Irish.

The question of whether the content in Irish of a particular degree satisfied the requirements would be a matter for determination in the particular case.
