Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Publication of Narrative Report.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

161 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Education when, if at all, she will publish a narrative report on the work of her Department as was the practice until 1965; and the way in which the absence of such reports is reconcilable with the duties imposed on her as successor to the Commissioners for Education.

As the Deputy will be aware, my Department produce an annual statistical report. Since 1965 the statistical report has been expanded to provide detailed educational data across the various educational levels and sectors. It provides a comprehensive overview of the Irish education system and a wide range of data on such topics as pupil enrolments. Subject choices of pupils, expenditure on education and so on is made available.

At present my Department are reviewing the nature and format of the statistical report with a view to improving the quality of service it provides to readers.

In recent years in the context of the Education Estimates it has been the practice for Ministers for Education to provide an overview on important educational issues and development.
The Deputy will be aware that since 1968 the educational journalOideas is published on a regular basis by my Department and is issued free of charge to all schools and colleges as well as being for sale to the general public. It disseminates information about educational matters at all levels. In addition the reports and discussion documents published by my Department, by the Higher Education Authority, by the National Council for Educational Awards, by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and by other educational bodies ensure that information on educational matters is widely available.
