Vol. 409 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - World Environment Day.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Ceist:

25 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Environment the initiatives taken by his Department to promote a consciousness and awareness of environmental issues on World Environment Day on Wednesday, 5 June; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

World Environment Day is principally a United Nations institution, marking the anniversary of the opening of the UN Stockholm Conference on the Environment 1972. The official ceremonies for World Environment Day were organised this year by the UN in Stockholm around the theme of "Climate Change — Need for Global Partnership".

Environmental awareness activity in this county is based mainly on ongoing programmes, rather than special events. It requires constant promotion and, to this end, initiatives are developed by my Department, ENFO and local authorities.

ENFO, the environmental information service established by my Department, arranged a special display of material in connection with World Environment Day, 1991. This display will continue at the ENFO offices in St. Andrew Street, Dublin until 14 June. The House will be pleased to know that the service is attracting about 1,000 visitors per week.
