Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Dublin Transport System.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

41 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment the discussions, if any, which have taken place between his Department and the Department of Tourism, Transport and Communications regarding the Government's commitment to introduce a light rail public transport system in Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Phase 1 of the Dublin Transportation Study is at present underway. This involves a review of the existing transportation situation and the preparation of terms of reference for Phase 2 which will involve an integrated transportation strategy to meet present and future needs. The steering committee for the study is chaired by my Department and includes representation from the Department of Tourism, Transport and Communications.

A specialised sub-group, under the chairmanship of the Department of Tourism, Transport and Communications and including representation from my Department, are carrying out an evaluation and assessment of the feasibility of rail and busway options for public passenger transport in relation to the former Harcourt Street railway line and the Tallaght area.
