Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Unemployment Statistics.

Jim Mitchell

Ceist:

61 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Taoiseach if he will outline on which month and year or months and years since independence the register of unemployment, including those on PRETA and PRECS has exceeded 257,000.

Changes in the administrative regulations governing the register of unemployment make its use in comparisons of unemployment over the long term invalid.

Persons on the pre-retirement allowance (PRETA) and pre-retirement credits (PRECS) schemes make a declaration that they have retired from the labour market. Such persons are properly excluded from the live register on the basis of this declaration.

The only period in which the aggregate of those on the live register and those on PRETA and PRECS exceeded 257,000 was the last Friday of April 1991.
