Vol. 409 No. 6

Written Answers. - Kells (County Meath) Courthouse.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

113 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the transfer of the District Court from Kells to Trim, County Meath because of inadequate facilities at the courthouse in Kells; if there are plans to repair and update the present courthouse to ensure that this facility is adequate for the work which has to be carried out by the County Registrar and the legal profession; when this work will commence; when the normal proceedings will return to Kells; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that there has been no change in the arrangements for sittings of the District Court in Kells. However, sittings of the Circuit Court have been transferred from Kells to Trim by order of the President of the Circuit Court. The statutory power to select court venues within Circuits is vested in the President of the Circuit Court and I have no function in the matter. I am conscious of the need to refurbish a number of courthouses, including Kells courthouse, and it is the intention to do so, with priority going to those courthouses most needing attention.
