Vol. 410 No. 2

Written Answers. - Representations to Kuwaiti Authorities.

Patrick McCartan

Ceist:

23 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the representations, if any, which the Government have made to the Kuwaiti authorities regarding the death sentences imposed on 29 people for allegedly collaborating with Iraq; and if his attention has been drawn to the criticism expressed by international human rights groups of the legal processes involved in obtaining these sentences.

I am aware of the death sentences which were imposed by Kuwaiti tribunals on 29 people accused of collaborating with Iraq and of the criticisms expressed by international human rights organisations of the legal processes involved.

The concerns of the member states of the European Community about these death sentences have been made known to the Kuwaiti authorities.

I understand that these sentences have now been commuted to life imprisonment and that the martial law regime under which they were imposed has been ended.
