Vol. 410 No. 2

Written Answers. - GNP/GDP Statistics.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

58 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Finance the percentage of GNP and GDP of each OECD country which is represented by repatriated profits for every year since 1985.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the category of financial outflows under the debt item "Profits, dividends, royalties, etc." of Table 2a of the Central Statistics Office balance of international payments release.

Neither my Department nor the OECD Secretariat maintain comparative international balance of payments data in sufficient detail to enable the information sought to be compiled, in the case of most OECD countries.
However, the IMF's Balance of Payments Statistics Yearbook, 1990 provides detailed international current account data up to 1989 including, for the majority of the relevant countries, an item "Other direct investment income: debit" which is broadly similar to the category of financial outflow concerned.
The following table sets out for the years 1985 to 1989 the item "Other direct investment income: debit"— gross outflows — as a percentage of GDP and GNP for those OECD countries for which the IMF yearbook provides this detail. It should, however, be noted that the data is not fully comparable as between countries: some countries, including Ireland, record the actual financial flows that took place in a particular year, while others record the amount of income accruing under this item independent of whether the associated flow took place in the year in question.
Other Direct Investment Income: debit (gross outflows) as a percentage of GDP and GNP in some OECD countries.
