Vol. 410 No. 6

Written Answers. - Treatment of Patient.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

133 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health the reason for the delay in treating a patient (details supplied) from County Mayo in University College Hospital, Galway.

The person concerned attended the accident and emergency department of University College Hospital, Galway on 19 March, 1991 at 9.50 a.m. following a road traffic accident. The patient was under observation at all times and was assessed by the senior house officer at 10.15 a.m.

The patient had various tests carried out and was then examined by the senior house officers from the surgical "on-call" team at 11.45 when a clinical decision was made to admit him.

Subsequently, while under observation and while awaiting a bed the patient's medical condition deteriorated. It was then decided to operate and he was transferred immediately to theatre for surgery.

The Western Health Board are satisfied that this patient was at all times in receipt of appropriate medical attention. The patient was discharged from hospital on 17 April 1991.
