Vol. 410 No. 6

Written Answers. - Rationalisation of Defence Forces.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

170 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the compensation and other arrangements it is intended to make for members of Permanent Defence Forces working with the FCA now scheduled to be returned to their Permanent Defence Force units under the Government directive to cut the strength of these cadres by 25 per cent; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

171 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Defence the savings which are envisaged if a directive given to the military authorities to reduce the strength of regular Defence Force personnel working with the FCA by 25 per cent is implemented; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Edward Nealon

Ceist:

172 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Defence if he or the Government have issued a directive to the military authorities to reduce by 25 per cent the strength of the cadres of Permanent Defence Force personnel working with the FCA; if he will outline the total number of Permanent Defence Forces now attached on a regular basis to the FCA; the purpose of the directive to reduce this by 25 per cent if such a directive has been issued; the effect this will have on the FCA; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 170, 171 and 172 together.

As I indicated to the Deputy in grievance time on 4 July 1991 the report of the Gleeson Commission clearly underlined the desirability of examining the whole question of the present deployment of the Defence Forces. It is in this context that the question of rationalisation of FCA units is being addressed.
No proposals have yet been formulated in this regard. Examination of the matter is proceeding and there will be no decision in relation to the number of staff to be retained at any particular location until this examination has been completed.
At present there are almost 800 Permanent Defence Force personnel attached on a regular basis to FCA Command Staffs, units and formations.
