Vol. 411 No. 5

Written Answers. - Carrickmacross (Monaghan) Water Supply Quality.

William Cotter

Ceist:

45 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the waters in Lough na Glac, Carrickmacross are heavily polluted; if he will outline the source of the problem; whether he proposes to make funding available to Carrickmacross Urban District Council to enable the capacity of the sewage treatment works to be increased; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Construction work to modify the existing secondary treatment plant at Carrickmacross and to provide phosphorous removal facilities is nearing completion and will improve the quality of effluent being discharged. A preliminary report for increasing the capacity of the plant has been approved. It is a matter for the local authority to prepare the necessary contract documents. The question of funding does not arise at this stage.
