Vol. 411 No. 6

Written Answers. - Breast Cancer.

Nuala Fennell

Ceist:

24 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the contradictory statements made recently by UK health spokesman on the value of breast self-examination for detecting early breast cancer, he will issue a clarifying statement and clear guidelines for women in this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer among women today. It should, however, be remembered that it is also one of the most treatable forms of cancer and when detected early can result in a full return to health without the need for surgery.

In relation to self examination, it is important to emphasise that women should remain alert for anything abnormal or unusual and if there is the slightest doubt she should discuss this with her family doctor without delay. The Irish Cancer Society have recently published a free booklet called Take Good Care of Yourself encouraging self examination which would be useful for all women to increase their awareness of all cancers including breast cancer.
