Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dáil Sitting Hours.

John Bruton

Ceist:

6 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Taoiseach if, in relation to the proposals on the review of the Programme for Government he will outline the point at which he envisages that Dáil Éireann sitting hours and sessions will be extended, and, in particular, whether it is his intention that the Dáil return in early January.

The Government's proposals for Oireachtas reform, including proposals for extended sitting hours and sessions, will be presented to the Committee on Procedure and Privileges, through that committee's working group on Dáil reform.

Subject to whatever proposals are adopted by that committee and approved by the House, a motion setting the date for the resumption of the Dáil after the Christmas recess will be put to the House at the appropriate time.

When will these proposals be presented to the committee?

Almost immediately.

Will the Taoiseach indicate whether the proposals will cover more than simply the question of sitting hours of the Dáil?

Will the Taoiseach indicate what issues will be covered?

Quite a few matters are outlined in the programme.
