Vol. 412 No. 2

Written Answers. - Trawling By-Law.

Mary Coughlan

Ceist:

42 Miss Coughlan asked the Minister for the Marine whether the by-law prohibiting trawling in Inver Bay, County Donegal is still in existence; and if not, if he will ensure that it is re-enacted to protect the spawning beds in the bay.

The by-law in question — By-law No. 7 of 1857 prohibiting the use of trawl nets at all times in Inver Bay, County Donegal remains on the statute.

I am reviewing this by-law from two perspectives, first to see if there is a continuing need for it on conservation grounds. Second, I am also concerned that, if controls are necessary, the legal instrument employed should be the most effective available for the exercise of that control.
