Vol. 412 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tax Estimates.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

64 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Finance if he will confirm that it is normal practice to call in the sheriff within 12 months after an estimate has been raised and no returns received from an employer.

The Revenue Commissioners have advised me that, in general, it is the practice to call the sheriff or, indeed, other enforcement agency, within 12 months and in most cases much sooner, after an estimate has been raised and no returns received from an employer.

Ceist:

65 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Finance the number of cases since 1985 where it was decided not to pursue employers for PRSI and PAYE in tandem, where estimates were raised, and the investigating officer so recommended.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that statistics are not available which would enable the information requested by the Deputy to be given. I should add that it is the policy of the Revenue Commissioners to pursue all employers where estimates have been raised. However, circumstances can change after a decision is taken to pursue an employer. For example, on receipt of a payment and/or a return the need for pursuit would be reviewed.
