Vol. 412 No. 5

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion Funding.

Enda Kenny

Ceist:

85 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine the amount of moneys made available to deal with coastal erosion in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

State funding for coast protection was transferred from the Office of Public Works to the Department of the Marine with effect from 1 January 1990.

Expenditure from the Vote for the Office of Public Works on coast protection in the years 1987 to 1989 and from the Vote to my Department in 1990 was as follows:

Year

Expenditure

£

1987

138,921.47

1988

Nil

1989

90,528.41

1990

1,049,754.00

The allocation to the Department of the Marine for coast protection in 1991 is £593,000.
In 1990, a special provision of £3 million was allocated by my Department to local authorities for repairs to piers, harbours and other marine infrastructure due to storm damage.
