Vol. 412 No. 6

Written Answers. - Handicapped Persons Allowance.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

137 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that parents of children with a mental or physical disability are experiencing great difficulties with the cumbersome procedures to avail of domiciliary allowances or disabled person maintenance allowance; if he has received submissions to improve procedures in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Applicants for domiciliary care allowance must undergo a medical examination and for disabled person's maintenance allowance, a medical and means examination which is carried out by the health boards. I am not aware of any difficulties with the procedures relating to applications for these allowances, nor have I received any submission concerning the need to improve the procedures. If the Deputy has any instances of difficulties being experienced in the processing of applications for the allowances I will have these examined.
