Vol. 412 No. 7

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil Under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy John Bruton. I now call on Deputy John Bruton to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I am seeking your leave, Sir, to move the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to discuss the urgent and important matter of what has been described by the Lord Mayor of Belfast as one of the darkest nights of terror we have witnessed in Belfast in recent years. This involved the murder of four men and the wounding of a five week old baby.

This House, as well as having an opportunity of expressing its revulsion at this savagery, should have an opportunity to debate what immediate steps can be taken to enhance security throughout this island and thereby contribute to the ending of violence, which is a necessary precondition to a durable political solution.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 30. Therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion. There are ample ways and means open to the Deputies to raise this matter on ordinary notice and in fact it may be adverted to in the ensuing debate of today.
