Vol. 412 No. 7

Written Answers. - Report Findings.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

65 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on a recent media report (details supplied) which stated that a certain number of deaths could be prevented if the dangers associated with overload of X-rays were rigidly controlled; and if he will outline his plans to deal with this situation.

All X-ray equipment here is subject to licensing requirements operated by the Nuclear Energy Board to ensure that safe levels of radiation are being discharged. This equipment is tested, monitored and inspected by the Nuclear Energy Board. Radiation is recognised as a potential health hazard and the work of the Nuclear Energy Board in the development of radiological protection has been a significant contribution to maintaining the health of the Irish people.

Surveys are undertaken by the Nuclear Energy Board to assess the dosage to patients involved in X-rays and other medical procedures involving radiation. These have shown that Ireland compares favourably with other countries in this regard. My Department are in continuous contact with the Nuclear Energy Board in regard to radiological protection.

Ultimately, it is a matter for the patient's medical practitioner to advise on the appropriate method of diagnosis and course of treatment in each case.
