Vol. 413 No. 1

Written Answers. - Remedial Works Scheme.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

131 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment the reason Wexford County Council was not given a specific allocation of money, under the bathroom and remedial works scheme of the programme for social housing; the number of counties that received an allocation under the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Local authorities are responsible for the management, maintenance and improvement of their rented dwellings, including the provision of bathrooms. The £2 million bathroom sub-programme introduced this year is intended to supplement the expenditure of authorities from their own resources to assist them to eliminate this deficiency in their housing stock. The limited funds available under the sub-programme were allocated to authorities which had a comparatively high number of dwellings without bathroom facilities. Allocations under the sub-programme were made to 21 authorities including Wexford Corporation, Enniscorthy UDC and two county councils.

Capital allocations this year under the remedial works scheme were made to 41 housing authorities including Wexford Corporation, Enniscorthy UDC, New Ross UDC and 12 county councils. No proposal under the remedial works scheme has been received from Wexford County Council.
