Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Scheme Allocations.

Patrick J. Morley

Ceist:

148 Mr. Morley asked the Minister for the Environment the total expenditure on the urban renewal programme to date since its commencement; the towns which have benefited under the programme; and the amounts allocated in each case.

Qualifying urban renewal projects in areas designated under the urban renewal scheme benefit from special tax reliefs and rates remissions rather than from direct expenditure by the Exchequer. However, a scheme of urban renewal grants was introduced in 1989 to assist works by local authorities to upgrade the general environment of the designated areas. A total of £5.5 million has been allocated to date under this scheme as set out in the following tabular statement.
