Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Services for the Mentally Handicapped.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

164 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Health if she will make special funds available for a proper training course for Down's Syndrome trainees who attend the Sheltered Workshops Associations for two years throughout the country; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Training for people with mental handicap, including people with Down's Syndrome, is being provided throughout the country in centres funded by health boards and by my Department. Needs and Abilities, the report of the Review Group on Mental Handicap Services, recommends that the Department of Labour should play a greater role in the training and employment of people with mental handicap who are capable of following the training provided and who are suitable for open employment. Discussions will shortly take place with the Department of Labour on this matter.
