Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Drug Seizures.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

33 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the number of seizures of ecstacy tablets made by the Garda Síochána in the Dublin area so far this year; and his views on whether any special measures are required to deal with this additional drug problem.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of seizures of so-called "ecstasy" tablets made by the Garda Síochána in the Dublin area to date this year is 27, involving a total of 180 tablets. The Garda authorities are satisfied that the problem of availability of such tablets can be adequately dealt with by the existing specialist drug units helped by the substantial number of other gardaí who have been trained to deal with drug problems.

The situation is, however, being closely monitored by the Garda who are alert to the dangers of a problem developing in this respect and appropriate steps will be taken to identify and deal with any increase in the supply of this drug to this country.
