Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Artificial Insemination Legislation.

Willie O'Dea

Ceist:

100 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he is reviewing the artificial insemination legislation; when the review will be completed; and the aspects of the legislation that will be reviewed.

The artificial insemination legislation is currently under review in the context of a requirement to transpose into national law the various EC veterinary and zootechnical Directives which have recently been adopted in the area of trade in pure-bred breeding animals, their semen and embryos and the approval for breeding of such animals or the use of their semen in artificial insemination. In the meantime, of course, practical effect is being given in Ireland to the provisions of these Directives.

The opportunity is being taken to look at all the existing national legislation in this area. The review is still in progress and will be completed as quickly as possible.
