Vol. 413 No. 5

Written Answers. - Use of Intervention Beef.

Roger T. Garland

Ceist:

102 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food whether intervention beef is now, or has ever been in the past used in Ireland, especially by State or semi-State institutions including hospitals and prisons; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under EC Regulation 2848/89 covering the sale of intervention beef to certain welfare institutions and bodies, Irish intervention beef is supplied each year to non-profit-making voluntary hospitals in Ireland but not to prisons. In addition a limited quantity of free beef is distributed each year to certain social welfare recipients and to hostels.

Intervention beef is sold regularly for commercial processing in Ireland.
