Vol. 413 No. 7

Written Answers. - Visit by Health Board Chief Executives.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

37 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health if she will make a statement on the recent visit by six health board chief executive officers to Guys and Lewisham Trust where they consulted the chief executive management representatives and local politicians on the work of the trust; and if the visit by the six health board chief executive officers is an indication of the way in which Irish health services are going.

The Institute of Public Administration have for several years, in collaboration with the King's Fund College, London, been running a management develoment programme for senior managers in the health boards. As part of that programme, a three day visit by the chief executive officers of the health boards to the King's Fund College was arranged in the course of which the King's Fund College organised visits to Guys and Lewisham hospitals and their mental health unit. The visit to King's Fund College was part of an ongoing process of broadening perspectives on healthcare management in Europe.

The Deputy will be aware that a consultation process is currently taking place on the detail of the reorganisation of the health services, the broad principles of which were announced in September. A key objective of the consultation process is to ensure that the new arrangements will be appropriate to the structure and characteristics of the health services in Ireland.
