Vol. 413 No. 7

Written Answers. - Adequacy of Betting Legislation.

Seán Power

Ceist:

86 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Finance if he has satisfied himself that the Betting Act, 1931 under which bookmakers are operating is no longer adequate; and if he will consider bringing forward a new betting Act.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that those provisions of the Betting Act, 1931 for which they are responsible, in particular the licensing of bookmakers and the registration of bookmakers premises, are generally operating satisfactorily. My main concern is to safeguard the betting duty revenue and the adequacy of the relevant legislation, in this regard, is kept under review by my Department in conjunction with the Revenue Commissioners.

The operation of other aspects of the Act is not primarily my responsibility.
