Vol. 413 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Curriculum.

Tomás MacGiolla

Ceist:

117 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if he will outline in respect of second level education (1) those subjects which are compulsory for the purposes of study and/or certification and (2) the recommended time to be allocated to each subject.

The approved course for recognised junior pupils in secondary schools must include the following subjects:

(i) Irish.

(ii) English.

(iii) Mathematics.

(iv) History and Geography.

(v) Not less than two other subjects from the approved list of examination subjects.

(vi) Civics.

The approved course for junior pupils in vocational schools is as outlined above except that instead of (iv) history and geography the course must include mechanical drawing/technical graphics or art, craft, design or home economics or business studies.

The approved course for recognised senior pupils must include not less than five subjects from the approved list of examination subjects one of which must be Irish.

Community and comprehensive schools provide a comprehensive system of education combining instruction in academic and technical subjects and the compulsory common core of subjects is drawn from the approved subjects referred to above for secondary and vocational schools.

Candidates at the junior or leaving certificate examinations are not required to sit any particular subject for certification purposes.

In the syllabuses for certain subjects a time allocation is suggested for the entire course. The manner of this time allocation is at the discretion of the management authorities of individual schools.
My Department exercise a monitoring function in regard to the time allocation given to the subjects of the curriculum. This is facilitated by the fact that second level schools are required to furnish copies of their time-tables to my Department each year.
