Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Third Level Admission Requirements.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

34 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education if he will outline his plans to ensure that third level institutions do not make unfair demands on applicants in their procedures for taking or demanding deposits at entry or registration; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

44 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education his views on whether the college fee deposit system at third level, whereby if a place is accepted and later not taken up the deposit is either fully or partially lost, is justified now that the Regional Technical College/Dublin Institute of Technology places are dealt with by the Central Applications Office; the action he proposes to take; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 34 and 44 together. I am pleased to say that following initiatives with the various institutions the acceptance fees paid by students is fully transferable between the third level institutions operating within the CAO/CAS system.

I accept that there is a need to rationalise the position on the level of acceptance fees between the institutions within the CAO/CAS system. I intend to have this and other related matters reviewed by the working group on co-ordination of admission requirements.
