Vol. 413 No. 9

Written Answers. - Kenmare (Kerry) College Accommodation.

Michael Moynihan

Ceist:

95 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to the serious position in Holy Cross College, Kenmare, County Kerry in regard to (1) pupil accommodation (2) toilet facilities and (3) proper exit facilities from classrooms in the event of a fire; if he will outline the financial provision which his Department is prepared to make so that remedial work can be undertaken without further delay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While the parents council have been in touch with my Department regarding these matters the school authorities have not made any recent application for grant assistance for improvement work to the secondary school. The planning of the proposed new community school for Kenmare is proceeding and the plans include refurbishment of parts of the existing Holy Cross secondary school which are to be incorporated into the new school. Pending the provision of the new school building my Department would, of course, be prepared to examine any proposals the school have in mind in essential remedial work for the existing facilities.
