Ceist:

32 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the role of the Naval Service and Air Corps in relation to submarine activity around our coast.

40.

ask the Minister for Defence if the Naval Service and Air Corps have received any special instructions or directions from his Department to observe and undertake surveillance work on submarine activity around our water.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 32 and 40 together.

The Naval Service, with assistance from the Air Corps, are responsible for the surveillance of Irish territorial waters. Vessels of the Naval Service are fitted with appropriate equipment to enable them perform this task.

The Naval Service and the Air Corps have not received any special instructions or directions from my Department in regard to observing or undertaking surveillance work on submarine activity around the Irish Coast.
